Food-borne polyphenols have long contributed to human health via multifaceted mechanisms, while emerged studies especially those published in recent 10 years witnessed the close relevance between bioactivity of with iron homeostasis. Polyphenols are involved various physiological processes and manifest multidirectional regulative effects. The diversiform polyphenols–iron interactions extended cognition disorders diseases. This review aims present a comprehensive scope interactions, structural property, biological effects, molecular mechanism on homeostasis were systematically illustrated, categorized, exemplified, discussed. Multiple related diseases focused on, specific elucidated during pathogenesis, development, intervention, treatment. Present shortages such as bidirectional unclear mechanism, clinical challenges, extraction efficiency also analyzed, some innovative techniques adopted for polyphenols–iron-based systems or therapies explorations discussed, inspiring future perspectives understandings, exploitations, correlations both polyphenols. brings stage, telling full story how anchor achieve beneficial bioactivities, enlightening ideas interactions-based understanding diseases, illumining strategies dietary adjuvant therapeutic agents iron-related abnormality.
